Many Haitians are brought over or enter the DR to work in the sugarcane industry under difficult conditions. This two-sided textile work contrasts the dark world of sugar to the hope experienced by Haitian women who are employed in a DR fair-trade business that provides a good living as well as hope found in Christian teaching. Like Dos Lados, it is also a play on the fact that Hispaniola is a divided island.
